Happy (post) Met Gala Day! Known to fashion lovers as the Superbowl of Fashion, the Met Gala often brings out the best of style. This year’s theme was “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.” If you’re not familiar with Rei’s work, this architectural designs, unconventional silhouettes, and a lot of volume. So basically, an avant-garde look was required of the guests.
For this list, I considered how good the look was (of course), but I also gave great precedence to how on-theme the look was. An on-theme look that’s kind of odd may land someone in the best dressed list, and a beautiful but obviously off-theme dress may earn someone a worst dressed slot. So let’s begin! I’m actually going to start with the worst dressed because I like to save the best for last 😉.
WORST DRESSED
Sofia Richie – This is actually the best image I could get of Sophia’s look. The ill-fitting dress, out-of-place leather jacket, and cheap looking bag didn’t work for Ms. Richie’s first Met Gala.

Kim Kardashian West – To be honest with you, I was shocked when I saw Kim on the red carpet. This is just so..simple. Kim explained to André Leon Talley that she knew everyone else would be dressed in their most avant garde gowns and she wanted to go for something different, but this look is so off-theme that it made her stand out, and not in a good way.

Selena Gomez – Looks like Prom 2017 instead of the Met Gala.

Virgil Abloh – I get wanting to be different and laid-back and “I’m too cool to care”, but this is just offensive.

Gwyneth Paltrow – So off-theme…so so off-theme.

Kendall Jenner – An unflattering gown that we’ve seen too many times before.

BEST DRESSED
Cassie – Yes. Just yes.

Nicki Minaj – I am VERY proud of Nicki’s look this year. It combines her signature sexiness with the theme of the night. Also, this dress is by H&M. Wow!

Jaden Smith – The accessories are what make this look. From the shoes to the diamond grill to Jaden’s cut-off dreads in his hand, this outfit fully encompasses the Comme des Garçons spirit.

Ashley Graham – Ashley went sultry for her first Met Gala, but the cascading flowers are reminiscent of Rei’s work.

Stella Maxwell – Something about this look spoke to me when I first saw it. It’s unique, flatters Stella’s figure, and photographs well.

Zendaya – So beautiful. While some said that this look wasn’t really on-theme, something about the architecture and colors of the dress, coupled with Zendaya’s hair, seemed avant-garde to me.

Lily Alridge – A totally different look for the supermodel. The fuchsia face veil, white dress, and red boots worked wonderfully well together.

AND THE WINNER OF THE NIGHT IS….
Rihanna – Bad Gal Riri’s look was straight the Comme des Garçons runway, and it showed. She wore by far the most inventive, most stunning, and most talked about look of the night. Plus, her after party look was just as fab.
